If you wish to see the dark path America is considering treading, read Gitta Sereny's book "Into That Darkness: An Examination of Conscience". It's probably the hardest book I've ever attempted to read.
It is based on seventy hours of interviews with Franz Stangl, the commandant of Treblinka. The biography recounts how a child from Austria, once infected with Hitler's malignant narcissism, devolved into an unrepentant monster. Love is the only antidote for that disease.
